Documenting 301
Publishing Girard's 1972 Design in Interiors Magazine
In 1974, Alexander Girard wrote to Irwin Management's William D. Chambers asking if he would consider having 301 photographed for publication. Chambers consulted with other members of Irwin Management to weigh the pros and cons of having the offices published. Balthazar Korab photographed the offices, and the article was published in Interiors magazine in February 1975. Neither Columbus nor the client's name appeared in the article.
William D. Chambers and Alexander H. Girard
The 301 Washington Street Collection, the core of this digital exhibit, is a gift from William D. Chambers. Chambers is a lawyer who worked for Irwin Management Company. He had a close relationship with architect Alexander Girard. In addition to all the materials documenting Girard's 1972 301 project, the 301 Washington Street Collection includes personal correspondence from Girard, clippings and ephemera about Girard, and clippings and ephemera about Herman Miller, Inc.
