The Journey to Columbus

From West Berlin, "Large Arch" was moved by boat to the West German port of Hamburg. The sculpture left Hamburg aboard the James Lykes on March 5, 1971, and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, on March 23, 1971.

Once in New Orleans, "Large Arch" was moved to a barge. It travelled up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and arrived in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 13, 1971. Library director Stephen W. Suckow inspected the crated sculpture while it was still on the barge.

The crated sculpture was transferred from a barge to a truck operated by Bowman Brothers Trucking for its 75-mile trip to Columbus, Indiana.

Anchored in Place

"Large Arch" arrived in Columbus on Wednesday, April 14, 1971. As it was taken from its crate and bolted in place, teachers brought school children to watch and crowds gathered nearby. After "Large Arch" was anchored in place, Dunlap and Company completed paving the library plaza with brick.
