Bill:
Thanks so much for sending the article from the Republic. You certainly cut and taped the various pieces!
It's a bit of sweet and sour. There were a lot of good times in that building. It will be sad to see it in other hands. But I guess that is simply the evolution of life.
l would be delighted to hear what is next on your agenda. When you feel like talking I would enjoy hearing your plans for the future.
After a life of striving to climb the next mountain ahead, it is difficult to adjust to waking up in the morning and saying to myself "l really don't have priorities that must be done today." It is a real adjustment that I haven't achieved well . It is made more difficult by the fact that energy really does decline as you get older. I do exercise daily — of some sort, either walking or the elliptical trainer. But there is that "need to achieve something" which is difficult for me to reach. Perhaps I have my minds eye missed focused on the height of achievements to be made.
So I big I had to hear your thoughts.
Best regards Harold

A 25-member study group from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in NYC will visit Columbus this week from Thursday-Saturday (October 12-14).
A focus of the study group will be the work of interior designer, Alexander Girard. The Cooper-Hewitt currently has a major Girard exhibit that runs through March 18, 2001. Therefore, the group will visit our 301 office building and the Miller's home to see Girard's work first hand.
The group will arrive at IMCo at 10:30 a.m. on Friday where WDC [William D. Chambers] will greet them and give them a tour of our building. The group will end up in the dining room for refreshments.
We want to use this visit as an opportunity to organize and clean up our work spaces. The ledges of all support staff spaces should be completely clear, i.e., no papers, dishes, files, etc. should be placed on these ledges. All offices should be free of clutter.
We greatly appreciate your help in this organizational effort. PJB and I are available to assist you with packing or moving things to storage, if necessary. Just let me know if you need us.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Irwin Miller
Irwin Management Company
P.O. Box 808
Columbus, Indiana 47201
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Miller,
Thank you very much for inviting Donald Albrecht and me to visit you in your home. It was our honor to meet both of you, to learn first-hand about your home and to experience its brilliant spaces, both indoors and out.
I would like to confirm that we plan to bring a small group to Columbus on Thursday, October 12 through Saturday, October 14. We would like the weekend’s itinerary to conclude with a visit with you at your home on Saturday, October 14 from 10:00 am to approximately noon. Undoubtedly, this culminating event will be the tour’s highlight. Following our visit, we will hold a lunch at a local restaurant before tour participants depart for the Indianapolis airport.
As you well know, in order to be fully appreciated, architecture must be experienced. We are very grateful that you have invited the National Design Museum to extend an invitation to a very select group of designers and Museum patrons to visit your home. Please know that we will work closely with you and with Beverly McDermott to shape a visit that makes the most minimal impact possible on your home and on your privacy. As we discussed, we will strictly limit the number of tour participants to 20 so that, along with Museum staff, our group will not exceed 25.
I have attached a DRAFT itinerary of the tour. Please note that, with your permission, we would like to begin the tour with a dinner on the terrace of the Irwin Home and Gardens. I am in contact with Gethen Thomas, the chef at Cummins Engine Company Corporate Headquarters, to provide catering for our group throughout the tour. I understand that he has catered events at the Irwin Home and would be our choice for the “welcome” dinner there on Thursday, October 12. I have also suggested that our group tour Alexander Girard’s remarkable interiors at 301 Washington Street and to enjoy some refreshment there. With your approval, I will proceed with planning. Within the next two weeks, I will finalize the tour’s itinerary in order to send a letter of invitation by the end of this month. (I will fax a draft of this letter to you and I welcome your comments.)

Finally, I expect that some members of the architecture and design press will be very eager to join this tour and to document the tour for publication. As you mentioned during our recent visit, tour participants are welcome to take photographs of your home for personal use only. The Museum understands that all publication of photography must be approved by you. Therefore, I will forward all press inquiries to Beverly McDermott for your consideration.
We are very excited about bringing our group to Columbus this fall and, again, we are very grateful to you for inviting us to visit you at your home. We recognize the opportunity presented by this program to foster meaningful and lively discussions among some of today’s greatest design minds about the potential for architecture to serve as a catalyst for positive community development. Along with having a wonderful time, our hope is to inspire design patronage in others and to appropriately honor the great works, architects, and patrons represented in Columbus Indiana.
With gratitude and with very best wishes,
Dorothy Dunn

Joyce Orwin called today to confirm the tour of 301 for the Bauhaus Group from the Chicago Architectural Institute on May 13. They will arrive at 301 between 3:15-3:30 p.m. that day. They will come to the front door. There will be 45 people in the group and Joyce and another VC tour guide will be with them.
They are also having a reception in the Irwin Gardens from 6:30-7:30 p.m. (time change from original time of 5:30-6:30 p.m.). Helmut is aware of the time change. Smith's Row is doing the food for the reception and they will need to get into the Gardens at 5:00 p.m.
The tour will enter the Gardens from the main gate on Fifth Street.

Dear Bill:
Congratulations on your new status! and lots of good wishes.
My next trip to Columbus seems not to be materializing.
I have been waiting to hear from Hat for over a month regarding it.
I am now involved in working full time on an exhibition here, and would be unable to leave until after the holidays.
Regarding the carpet in the IM offices — it seems to me you need to reorder enough to do the job over, or progressively as desired.
The mill that originally made the carpet is back in very good shape.
However, it will, of course, be more expensive and take a while to obtain.
If you can send me a sample (preferably unused), and the square footage (indicate lengths and widths) you need, I could then obtain estimates of cost and time.
I suppose the interim solution is juggling the pieces you have.
Continued . . . . . . . .

I would presently guess that it would take three to four months to obtain new carpet. However, I may be being optimistic!
The Santa Fe project consists of giving our Foundation Collection to the Museums of New Mexico. ‘
That is what I am working on, and hoping to live through it!
Our best wishes to you and Jackie,
AHG/mvb

Re: Color Scheme for "Irwin Block Building“
Dear Sandro:
Enclosed are several items that may (or may not) be helpful to you in laying out a color scheme for the Irwin Block
Building.
Item 1 - Map of downtown area showing location of the Irwin Block Building relative to Visitors
Center, City Hall, new Citizens Bank, etc.
Item 2 - Packet of photos showing Irwin Block Building. There is a straight-on view and a view showing the building in relation to the old Republic building. (The same person owns both buildings. We think he may ask for some advice on the Republic building also.)
Item 3 - Drawing of Irwin Block Building——taken from the original set of downtown color schemes.
The owner is planning to do the painting or sandblasting late this summer. I would like to get back to him with your recommendation by mid-June if that is compatible with your schedule.
5incerely,
WDChambers/jmm

Bob Weber's "Irwin Block"
1. Building Last winter Bob Weber mentioned that he would like to repaint the “Irwin Block" Building (north side of Fifth Street between Franklin and Washington), and wondered if Mr. Girard had any recommendations since the present paint scheme for that building was a part of Mr. Girard's downtown plan. We told him that we would ask Mr. Girard to take a look next time he was in town.
2. Last week Mr. Girard looked at the building. His initial reaction was that the building should be sandblasted and returned to natural red brick finish to harmonize with City Hall, Visitors Center and the new Citizens Savings & Loan building.
3. In a conversation today with Bob Weber, I told him that Mr. Girard had looked at the building and that he felt maybe sandblasting would be preferable to painting. After making sure that Mr. Girard's advice would not cost him anything, Weber said that he would like to pursue this idea in more detail, with a view toward doing either sandblasting or painting the building late this summer or early this fall.
4. I told Weber that I would ask Mr. Girard to show the suggested new color scheme on a drawing of the building so that he and Mrs. Weber could review it and decide.
5. Mr. Girard has photos and drawings of the Irwin Block Building. He will put'the suggested new scheme (including window trim, etc.) on a drawing and we'll be back in touch with Mr. Weber by June 15.
6. Bob Weber did not mention a color scheme for the old Republic building. We are prepared to assist him with some suggestions if he does ask.
