We are enclosing a reproduction of a sketch showing Library and Plaza. Although you would require a rendering for Public consumption, this sketch may be of interest to the Board. In particular, it gives a good indication of the relation of steps and plaza to the Irwin Home and how the steps focus upon the Library entrance.
As Bob Landsman will have told you, we are bringing the cost estimate up-to-date. We expect to run a further check when the drawings are further advanced, but believe it imperative to determine at this time where we stand. Around the beginning of the month, we would be able to discuss building costs and related matters. Should further explanation be deemed necessary, we could at that time review the proposed electric heating.

An early architectural model of downtown Columbus, Indiana by I.M. Pei & Associates, photographed by Hadley Fruits. Created in 1964, this model depicts a large circular fountain between the library building, Eliel Saarinen's First Christian Church, and the Irwin home. Architect I.M. Pei envisioned that this large open space containing the fountain would be the center for downtown cultural life, with a library, museum, and auditorium. The original proposal in 1964 planned for Fifth Street between Washington and Pearl streets to become a pedestrian zone. This original proposal was not realized, but the library and its plaza still create a vital civic space.
