<dcterms:description>A 19-minute color film featuring Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely (1925–1992) describing his monumental kinetic sculpture “Chaos No. 1” in Columbus, Indiana. The film also includes architect Cesar Pelli (1926–2019) talking about his building Commons and Courthouse Center which houses Tinguely’s sculpture. In February 1974, independent filmmaker John Denny filmed Tinguely at Kroot Corporation where Tinguely sourced scrap iron for his sculpture and at the Commons during the sculpture’s installation. Tinguely characterizes “Chaos No. 1” as a very well-constructed machine whose function is to be ridiculous. The film includes the reactions of many Columbus residents seeing the sculpture in motion for the first time.

To watch a version of this video that includes subtitles, a transcript, and an index, please visit: https://youtu.be/HCxWfPRcdy8</dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description>A 20-minute black and white video featuring Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely (1925–1992) describing his monumental kinetic sculpture “Chaos No. 1” in Columbus, Indiana. The video footage was shot during the installation of “Chaos No. 1” in the Cesar Pelli-designed Commons and Courthouse Center in February 1974. At odds with Pelli’s hope that the sculpture would run like a clock, Tinguely characterizes it as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with unpredictable bursts of madness before becoming calm again. Tinguely discusses the positive working conditions of Columbus and mentions his gratitude to J. Irwin Miller, who along with Clementine Tangeman and Xenia Miller, commissioned the sculpture. John "Jack" Brubaker, Robert "Bob" Marasco, and Susan Showalter made the video for Video Access Center. The video appears rather rough, and it likely is a compilation of footage rather than a completed work.

To watch a version of this video that includes subtitles, a transcript, and an index, please visit: https://youtu.be/CTV8yruuUvY</dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description>A 7-minute video recording created by combining two 3-minute recordings of the 1971 transportation of Henry Moore's "Large Arch" from Louisville, Kentucky to Columbus, Indiana. "Large Arch" was made at the Hermann Noack foundry in Berlin, West Germany. The sculpture left Hamburg, West Germany aboard the James Lykes on March 5, 1971 and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 23, 1971. The recording begins with the sculpture's arrival in Louisville, Kentucky on April 13, 1971 after having travelled up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The crated sculpture was then transferred from a barge to a truck for its 75-mile trip to Columbus. "Large Arch" was installed in front of the Cleo Rogers Memorial Library on April 15, 1971. Workers then paved the circular platform with bricks. Unfortunately, the recording ends before "Large Arch" is removed from the crate.

To watch this video, please visit: https://youtu.be/H2h3ixxxuBo</dcterms:description>

The highlight of the ceremony was the speech by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson (1912-2007), who visited Columbus as part of her Crossroads: USA Tour. Her tour featured several stops in the Midwest from September 20-23, 1967 to see the effect of policies from her husband President Lyndon B. Johnson’s (1908-1973) “New Society” initiatives, which influenced schools and communities like Columbus. The building’s architect was Gunnar Birkerts (1925-2017), a Latvian-American architect noted for his late-modernist designs. This recording also features speeches by then Indiana Governor Roger D. <dcterms:description>A 41-minute video recording of J. Irwin Miller's speech before the Bartholomew Consolidated School Board in October 1973 regarding the need to renovate or replace the Taylorsville School. The school board invited J. Irwin Miller and Richard Stoner, president of the Foundation, to speak about the Cummins Foundation Architecture Program, which had been subsidizing architects’ fees for public buildings for over a decade. Miller explained Cummins Inc.’s interest in developing outstanding school buildings as both a major taxpayer and as an employer. He urged timely and forward-thinking building of public infrastructure, especially in the context of 1970s inflation. Miller shared a letter written in 1961 explaining the Foundation’s goals and guidelines, stressing that responsibility for selecting and working with the architect rests with the school board. When asked to comment on the rapid shifts in contemporary educational theory, he articulated the basic educational outcomes that Cummins needed in employees rather than specific skill sets. Although there is scant detail about specific built projects and no mention of an architect by name, this meeting documents the philosophy and priorities of Miller and the Cummins Foundation Architecture Program during its most active period. This speech was recorded by the Video Access Center, also known as Video Action Center, at the school board meeting and aired on local cable access channel 5 on October 4, 1973, at 9:00 PM, according to the Republic newspaper. Miller’s speech is prefaced by the chair of the school board Jack Hilycord who remains unnamed in the video. After a cut that edits out an unknown portion of the meeting, Mr. Miller responds to a question from a school board member identified as Dr. William Bickers. After the school board meeting, the same video tape includes a partially taped-over unrelated interview between Gerald L. Olson and an unnamed man discussing the Miller family’s private support of political candidates in an attempt to improve the caliber of government representatives in the post-Watergate era.

To watch a version of this video that includes subtitles, a transcript, and an index, please visit: https://youtu.be/0gDaKn-JeU8</dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description>A 57-minute sound recording of the dedication of the Cleo Rogers Memorial Library and Large Arch. The recording documents the dedication of the Bartholomew County Library, which was named in honor of long-term librarian, Cleo Rogers (1906-1964). The library was designed by architect I. M. (Ieoh Ming) Pei (1917-2019) and his firm, I. M. Pei & Partners. The project architect overseeing design and production was Kenneth D.B. (David Bertram) Carruthers (1928-2014). The ceremony also included the dedication of Large Arch, the sculpture on the plaza constructed by Henry Moore (1898-1986). There were several speeches throughout the ceremony from those involved in the project and notable members of the community, including I. M. Pei; Carl J. Weinhardt, Jr. (1927-1986), the director of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at that time; State Representative and Columbus native, William Calvert Brand (1918-2005); and Columbus Mayor, Eret H. Kline (1907-1987).

To watch a version of this video that includes subtitles, a transcript, and an index, please visit: https://youtu.be/uQyYzik72rE</dcterms:description>
