Large Arch in Louisville and Columbus (video recording)
Subject
Description
A 7-minute video recording created by combining two 3-minute recordings of the 1971 transportation of Henry Moore's Large Arch from Louisville, Kentucky to Columbus, Indiana. Large Arch was made at the Hermann Noack foundry in Berlin, West Germany. The sculpture left Hamburg, West Germany aboard the James Lykes on March 5, 1971 and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 23, 1971. The recording begins with the sculpture's arrival in Louisville, Kentucky on April 13, 1971 after having travelled up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The crated sculpture was then transferred from a barge to a truck for its 75-mile trip to Columbus. Large Arch was installed in front of the Cleo Rogers Memorial Library on April 15, 1971. Workers then paved the circular platform with bricks. Unfortunately, the recording ends before Large Arch is removed from the crate.
